PediPop

A participatory app for pediatric mask inductions.

This app is quick and simple to use. Even better, kids love it! Open this app as you are ready to begin your mask induction. Allow the child to pick their favorite balloon color. As the preset video of the balloon begins to play, encourage the child to "play a game", having them blow into the mask as they try to pop the balloon. With the inhalational anesthetic flowing, your pediatric patient will soon be slipping into stage II. Recommended for children ages 3-7 years old.

Can a mask induction be fun? With PediPop it can!

Arun Rama, MD

Pediatric Anesthesiologist

"Based on available behavioral and physiological data, the induction of anesthesia may be the most stressful procedure a child experiences during the entire perioperative period."*

The aim of PediPop is to leverage our current technology (smartphones), to aid in reducing the stress that often accompanies a mask induction. We want every anesthesia provider to have access to an important tool that goes beyond environmental distraction, and engages their participation. Use this app as a supplement to other current practice techniques. We recommend building up the child's excitement and anticipation of playing a "video game" or "popping a balloon". Once you open the app, place mask on child's face, have them pick a color, use maximum gas flows (i.e. sevo 8%), and encourage them to participate with the app. If your patient is not in stage II by the end of the first balloon, no problem! Have them do another one.
